What is Forex Trading
Forex trading involves exchanging one currency for another at an agreed price. The market operates 24 hours a day, five days a week, and is the largest financial market in the world, with daily turnover exceeding $6 trillion. For a Timor-Leste trader, the process works like this: you open a trading account with a broker, deposit funds (e.g., $500 via Bank Transfer or USDT), and then buy or sell currency pairs. For example, if you believe the Euro will strengthen against the US Dollar, you buy EUR/USD. If the price rises, you sell at a profit. Conversely, if you expect the US Dollar to strengthen, you sell EUR/USD. Your profit or loss is realized in USD, which is convenient since your local currency is USD—no conversion fees apply. Leverage allows you to control larger positions with a small deposit; for instance, with 1:50 leverage, a $200 deposit can control $10,000 worth of currency. However, leverage amplifies both gains and losses. Retail forex trading in Timor-Leste typically takes place via online brokers offering MetaTrader 4/5 or web platforms. You can trade from home in Dili or other areas using a stable internet connection. Key concepts include pips (the smallest price move), spreads (the difference between bid and ask price), and margin (the collateral required to open a trade). Always start with a demo account to practice without risking real money.
